You are 100% right, the betas have horrible s2n but they have even worse
us2n (unique signal to noise). Basically, lotsa people sayin' "me too" like
some braindead AOLer, to quote Weird Al.

Perhaps we should think about a closed beta program with much more limited
distribution -- note that the number of participants would limited. Perhaps
only X downloads of the beta for each version, with the number steadily
increasing for each beta we release? Or maybe a sign-up system, which could
be integrated into trac (in my dreams, hehe). That way we could actually
monitor who was filing bug reports and tickets, who was being helpful, and
who was not. Again, though, the fact that anyone can just build from source
themself makes all of the above a bit silly. Dang, if only Adium were
shareware! ;)

In b9's defense though, it works a hell of a lot better than b8 did; it
actually can maintain a connection to AIM.

I think the only real solution to our beta woes is to just buckle down and
start busting our asses. Perhaps after putting the finishing touches on our
how-to-contribute infrastructre of pages (it's a tad disorganized), I could
post a plea on the blog and try and get that posted on digg -- they seem to
love us there, so who knows, maybe we'll actually be able to get a little
bit of help. Although I think it is a pretty long shot -- my opinion of
Digg and its users is no secret (hint: I didn't write the line on the beta
page that says digg is awesome. :P).

p.s. I'm currently stranded at a friend's house for the night, as my car is
at the only gas station in the nation that completely closes withtin 15
minutes of their posted closing time. At least I got a new tire. Driving on
one of those tiny-ass spares is scary.
