[Adium-devl] [Adium-feedback] I would like to port Adium to Windows XP

I would think of a "port" as something which works substantially the same
way as the original (e.g. the chat windows, contact list, etc.) even if
there are some differences between the two versions, for example, without
the global menu bar, a windows port will need to find a place to put the
menus for the various windows (likely as part of the window itself). Those
are the differences I was talking about. The other area that a "port" would
focus on would be compatibility with the customization formats (e.g. xtras).
Forgive my pun, but if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, is it a
duck? Definitely maybe.. :P
I can't claim responsibility for the state of the shell or WMP (the shell
team has hundreds of developers, and WMP has between 20 and hundreds
depending on how you want to do the math). The majority of work that I did
on both projects is probably not something you'd be directly aware of. And,
honestly, I agree with you. That's why I use iTunes on my windows machine.

Alright, I'm a little confused.
1. It wouldn't' be straight port. Menu items/features would be changed
to make it more Windows-natural. Although the spirit of the
application would be preserved, I wouldn't want to make the same
mistake MSFT did when they released that terrible Office for the Mac
release that looked just like Windows.
How do you define the spirit of Adium? To me, it's the Mac OS X look and
ease of use. Windows-izing would make it another class of product (that is,
not Adium). With the possibility of making it harder to use. Neither the
Windows Shell or WMP are as easy to use products like Aqua and iTunes on Mac
OS X (in my opinion, I guess). If you're using a seperate code base, why not
just make your own multi-protocol IM program?
Also, how would you make "Windium" different to Miranda, Trillian et al?
What exactly are you asking permission for? Are you asking if you can name
your IM program Adium? What features do you intend on preserving in the
Windows version (given the majority of the code base depends on the Mac OS X
APIs).
It is good, however, to see your interest in the project! I'd love to see a
decent and easy to use multiprotocol IM program on Windows.
It might also be worth noting the ChatKit project - Adium is going to switch
to this at one point - it would be a waste of effort to port Adium when it's
about to undergo a major architectural change. Is there an equivalent of
ChatKit for Windows?
